Candlemas

The Gospel of Luke recounts the event of Jesus's first appearance in the Temple in Jerusalem. Forty days after His birth, Mary and Joseph took him to the Temple to complete Mary's purification after childbirth. This was also the time during which the redemption of the firstborn was to be performed. During this time Simeon the Righteous was there fulfilling the promise that he would not die before he had seen the Messiah. Simeon takes Jesus and prays over Him prophesying and acknowledging that He is the Savior and Redeemer of the world.
