The Scriptures are filled with incredibly detailed information, from Genesis to Revelation. Everything that is read in the Bible was written by 40 different authors over a span of nearly 1,600 years. Everything God instructed them to write, they wrote without question. There are seemingly endless genealogies, census numbers, innumerable regulations and laws, and many accounts of individuals receiving very specific instructions from God. All this was to say that the Bible holds many solid proofs of God’s attention to detail.
Fortunately, God is still an amazing God of detail. He does not overlook even one sparrow that falls. He knows the number of hairs on each head of every individual who ever lived. He knows and spans the length and breadth of the universe. He sees every tear, knows every thought, and hears every cry for help. And this awesome God in His unlimited wisdom created mankind with the ability to reason and analyze, to implement logical and systematic thought, and to process incredible amounts of information every single day.
It would be foolish to think that God ever expected mankind to simply invest minimum effort in what they did. Rather, God placed within each of His children a drive to be everything that He created them to be, including individuals of excellence. As a Christian, having a desire for this kind of excellence is critically important.
The Bible teaches that everything should be done “decently and in order,” as I Corinthians 14:40 says. While this passage of Scripture is referring to the usage of spiritual gifts within the church, the principle can be applied to every part of the Christian’s life. God is not a God of chaos, but a God of order. And as His children, Christians are called to live a life of order. It is for these reasons that a Christian needs to strive to do everything they do with order and integrity.
It is understood that if someone is not aware of specific standards that should be upheld, they cannot be held responsible for their ignorance. But everyone, regardless of what they do, should always strive to learn as much as possible whenever possible. And once a new or better way is discovered, it should be implemented as soon as possible.
However, to learn something and to do nothing about it is like the man that the Apostle James spoke of in James 1:23-24. The man sees his reflection in a mirror, as if coming face to face with what needs to be changed or improved. But rather than make the changes, he walks away and does nothing. What is worse is to think that just because no one else will know one way or the other that it’s okay to leave things as they are. The truth is that not only will that individual know, but God also will know. God does not look favorably on this kind of attitude.
Excellence can manifest in many different areas of a Christian’s life. It should show up in their prayer, their study of the Word, their marriage, their parenting, their financial stewardship, their time management, their keeping of the home, their work, and even their recreation. Every facet of the believer’s life has room for excellence. And so does the world.
The fact is that excellence does not go unnoticed. Others will see and notice something different about an excellent Christian. This is a significant part of the Christian’s overall testimony of Jesus Christ. The Spirit of Christ dwelling in and working through them will reflect in everything they do. Their lives will become a new standard that others can easily follow.
